Roehampton Limb User Group (RLUG), who are based at the Douglas Bader Centre, Roehampton, enjoyed a day out on the Grand Union Canal, sponsored by the Douglas Bader Foundation and hosted by Waterways Experiences.
We are grateful to RLUG Chairman, Christopher Harwood, who wrote the report below and has also been kind enough to send some great pictures of a memorable day for the group.
A day on the Grand Union Canal Hertfordshire was an adventure for us all, and for several the first time experience of just how majestic being on a canal barge can be. 4 mph is just the right speed to enjoy the surroundings. We were well supplied with both lunch food and drink, and tea (the scones, cream and jam kind!). A little bit of sunbathing for some on deck in the sunshine of the warm autumn day or enjoying the canal-side views from the shade of the saloon made for a relaxing afternoon. Then came the expectation of going through the locks allowing us off the boat to see the drill. Back on board it was Gemma’s turn to take the rudder under tuition from the skipper Peter and the bosun Roger. Successfully steering a barge boat as with a narrow boats demands know-how, judgement and focus at all times. We arrived back at base without calamities, just smiles and applause as Gemma was awarded a certificate for boat handling along our journey. Comments in the visitors book from our party says it all “Many thanks for a delightful trip and thanks for the bonus day of sun”, “Thoroughly enjoyed myself definitely do it again”.
